A Brief History

The Dormer House in Cape May has all of the appeal of a magnificent colonial revival home that was built in the turn of the century.  The expansive wrap around front porch is a relaxing spot where you can listen to the ocean waves crashing on a windy day.  It is also an ideal spot to view the passer-bys on Columbia Avenue and drink in the Victorian charm of the surrounding homes.

The Dormer House was built in 1899 by John F. Jacoby, a rich marble dealer from Philadelphia.

Here is a picture of what the Dormer House looked like in 1901. There have since been additions added onto the house to extend the kitchen and rear quarters.

I was also able to locate a picture of John F. Jacoby. This picture may have been taken from the side of the house where there is still located an original hitching post.

Lillian Hasting Room

Dormer House is a bed and breakfast inn located at 800 Columbia Avenue in Cape May, New Jersey. As the owners’ of this circa 1899 bed and breakfast, we are always updating the rooms here to keep them new, comforting, and inviting.

Recently. we have been updating the Lillian Hasting Room on the second floor.

This room has the feel of a comforting cottage.  The furnishings are country quiet with a warm blue and green palette.

Dormer House Parlor

The Dormer House is a bed and breakfast inn that is located on historic Columbia Avenue in Cape May, NJ. As innkeepers and owners, we pride ourselves in keeping the inn in it’s original 1899 glory with the modern amenities of today.

Areas inside the Dormer House have be slightly reconfigured over the years to make better use of the space.  This includes the parlor and an area on the second floor landing.

The parlor, which is located to the left of the side door, has been enhanced by the addition of a beautiful archway that was crafted by Dennis.  This enhancement gives the first floor an open-floor plan feel, but keeping with the cozy atmosphere that is desired.

No bed and breakfast would be complete without a beautiful stone fireplace. Original to the building, it is one of our favorite features here at Dormer House. John Jacoby, the first owner, owned a marble company in Philadelphia on Market Street. We have the fireplace, which is now convereted to gas, lit throughout the year.

We also have on display original china pieces that we have purchased throughout the years.  This piece of usable artwork is a true highlight and conversation piece at tea time.  Tea time at the Dormer House is from 3:30 to 4:30pm.  During tea time, you will be served an assortment of  delectibles including cookies and cakes.  These are all baked, of course, by Lucille.

Dormer House Breakfast Specialties

The Dormer House is located on 800 Columbia Avenue in the heart of Cape May, New Jersey. It is a well known bed and breakfast inn located on the corner of Franklin Street and Columbia Avenue.

When searching for a bed and breakfast in Cape May, you should consider the quality of food that will be served during your stay.

The fresh, home made breakfast that you will be served at the Dormer House is sure to impress you. Lucille, one of the owner and innkeeper’s, is forever in the kitchen thinking of new creative dishes as she watches the latest cooking shows. Lucille will also recreate dishes that she has ordered while traveling along the coast.

Once you rise from your peaceful night’s sleep, you can anticipate a home made breakfast.  It will range from specialty homemade cakes, muffins, pancakes or waffles, hot entree, breakfast meats and cold cereals. Coffee and tea is always available throughout the day at the beverage bar located in the parlor.  We try our best to make sure there is always something for every taste palate.  We will also do our best to accomodate dietary restrictions.  We want you to leave full, ready to start your adventure in beautiful Cape May.
